America do it Month/day/year.

But I usually want to know the day, becuase the month and year are there on top of the calender.

Well, if you have an appointment on the 15th... And It's the 12th today... You know it's September now and obviously you already know it's 2009...
It would be unwise to say 2009/09/12, as you -most-likely- already know the first two... Therefore the day is more significant...
