Yes but in by the time you reached first grade there were several second generation pokemon featured in the tv series, such as Ho-oh in the first episode and I'm certain you couldn't read at the age of two.

I had the new pokemon in kindergarten too... that was about 1996 (i think)

Gold and silver were release in 1998 in Japan, Red and Green in 1996.
