if gremlins turn evil if you feed them after midnight when can you start feeding them?
Also, what exactly constitutes feeding? If a gremlin eats something you accidentally left somewhere, does it turn evil? (This might be explained in the movie but I'm not about to rewatch.)
There is no such thing as exactly at midnight, the idea of "now" is wacky as hell and pretty much only exists in our brains as a concept. But I'm not PBS SpaceTime so I can't explain how that works.

does "midnight" just mean the midpoint of sunset and sunrise?
No, it means 00:00 according to the nearest clock which must be in sync with all other nearby clocks otherwise the director will scream at someone and they will have to do a reshoot or make some edits in postproduction.

does this just mean that gremlins are weak to visible light or are there other frequencies that they should avoid?
Maybe it's about a bunch of UV as the sun gives off a lot of that?

what is it about sunlight that makes it special compared to other sources of light? just the intensity of the photons? does this mean a powerful laser can also be used?
I think we can apply the general rule that if a powerful laser is not sufficient to solve your problem, it's simply not powerful enough.

and don't even get me started on gremlins 2 which is definitely meant to be taken as hard world building with stringent rules and not just some bit of wacky fun
I don't think I've seen gremlins 2, the first one was enough
wacky fun horror for me.
