Definitely one of the most important things that everyone should learn, learning to think for them self and respect other opinions, I feel that not nearly many enough do that (even though it's lots better than, say, 100 years ago).

very true, this is the way, only that it's the task of parents too, they have to teach their children so they don't get lost in a world of selfish people..

This is very important. I don't think a lot of parents really know how much of an influence they have over their children.

I hate the word selfishness. selfish is an insult used by hypocritical people who don't get what they want.

People only do things for a result of feeling good. This can mean removing your guilt and increasing pride in yourself by helping others less fortunate or it can mean buying a big house and eating delicious food.

Thanks to atheism people don't listen to preachers anymore. To save the world you must believe in something other than factual information.

This is hard to explain but I'll try. To the degree that it is detrimental to a society in a less recoverable way... this is to say as you said. Gain little by sacrificing much, this would be selfishness in my eyes, as I can only explain it. I cannot give a limit to this, as it is seen differently by everyone, but smaller grey areas aside many people can tell the difference between greed and sacrifice for little gain, though those may not be the words they'd use.

I use this word a lot in this thread, explain my hypocrisy, and what I'm not getting to the extent that I would use the word, aimed at no one in particular, as an insult. People don't always do things for a result of feeling good, it is natural to do things that make you feel bad that improve the survivability of the society. What you described for an example is an example of greed not the selfish. Greed can and usually does benefit two people. A non corrupt steel company owner may become rich and may live comfortably but he is also providing the materials for societies, companies, and such to expand and build. It's not atheism that has got people to not listen to preachers, it is the peoples own reasoning, possibly influenced by atheism (which I'm slowly finding a dirty word, I can elaborate later if anyone wants), but not caused, I would say. To rely solely on factual information has no detriment. To rely solely on a fallacy of false concreteness (or to say what you believe is true because you believe it), or on something with little evidence is a very dangerous and slippery slope. It does not hurt to believe in a religion, when done responsibly (also can be elaborated upon), but it is not required, many of us here can attest to that, based simply on our own lives. On a side note I'm a little offended by your first statement.

How about we talk about something different and altogether less serious?

As you may or may not know, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are going to be released in North America and Europe next month. This is an important event for me as they are remakes of my favourite video game ever. There was a club in my school for the people who had defeated Red. It only had two members. I was the best player out of the two of us, if only because He started with fire and I started with water.

The discussion here starts with my discovery that the game will include pokemon from the previous two generations, which I greatly detest for their unoriginality.

I know I'm not the only person who feels this way, but is it wrong for me to hate what the favourite things of my childhood have become? It doesn't have to be pokemon, anything you used to enjoy as a child can be used as an example.

I have another, Postman Pat was a tv show I watched when I was very young, and has had several updates since I've grown older that seemed fine to me as I saw them with my younger siblings. I then saw my youngest siste one day watching a tv show where Pat was flying a postal service helicopter to deliver post to The ciizens of what was once a sleepy countryside village. I was rather annoyed until I realised he didn't work for the awful Royal Mail, which mafe me feel much better.


So yes, what you liked as a child, how it makes you feel when it is changed.

I agree on the pokemon, after number 152 there were some pokemon that were original, but most of them were just ports of existing animals...
I watched the first season when I was a kid, and it was fine back then, only that the TV station didn't broadcast much chronologically...
I've also played pokemon on the gameboy pocket, later on gameboy colour, and much later on the DS...
Then the newer series, and I was getting older, I noticed that they just weren't creative any more...
The TV show was 'jumping the shark' and the games just the same with added stuff... It has lost it's glory to say the least...

For another example, games... I remember playing dig dug, pacman, rescue rover, rayman, all DOS classics...
Just rayman froze once in a while, and my dad would get angry...
Also simple java games (Flash was in it's beginning stage I believe) like Nobby Nuss, game sites back then had dozens of games...
Super mario land for gameboy pocket was an awesome game... I went to friends who had a SNES playing a very simple zombie shooter...
Later came PS1 and N64, both were with friends, crash bandicoot and super mario kart were my favourite...
And then I got my PS2 for my communion... The list goes on...

But I notice, these days, making games is much more about making money, they open up for a wider crowd -which is good-, but they're forgetting about the group gamers that started it all...
Like infinity ward, as I've told you before, they've completely cancelled out all benefits for pc gaming...
I'm keeping my eyes open for small independent developers that only ask for the money they need, and stand close to the gamers themselves... Like http://blog.wolfire.com/...

I'm part of small communities of die-hard gamers who stick to the games that rocked...

There will be a day, that I'll be forced to look back to the days of gaming...

I found a N64 and SNES recently, and i'll be playing those as soon as I can get hold of some cables for them. I was never a fan of mario games or any other platform games really, but I love Mario kart because of it's general lack of complex cotrols and stats found in most racing games. Green Shelling someone or beating them on their favourite track are the highlights of the game in my opinion. Mario kart wii is a disapointment though. The two new weapons are more annoying than the blue shell, the bikes are rubbish and the controls suck balls. In regards to Reggie's statement that it's not "your" father's mario kart, in my experience, people who played the original Super Mario Kart don't have children old
enough to play the wii version... (my dad had a Sega Mega drive).

I'll be getting Soul Silver fo sho, but I agree with how terrible the other generations were. After emerald it went down hill. the games were still good but the pokemon were lame... except the legendaries imo. If you're lucky they'll do it the same way as fire red and leaf green and the game will be the exact same, no new pokemon or anything until AFTER the elite four. I liked the fire red remake and I'm hoping that these will be just as good.

I'm surprised you didn't mention The Transformers movies, which seem to come second only to Dragonball Evolution in terms of awfulness. But don't worry about that! Keanu Reeves is on hand to aid Fox in creating a Cowboy Bebop live action movie that is sure to be the worst holuwood conversion ever in everyone's book! (yes I'm annoyed)

The only thing that ruined the transformers stuff is Shaia la what's his face... I didn't mind at first but he's irritating as piss now that I think about it. Take him out and the transformers stuff wasn't all that bad. The toys are WAY OVER COMPLICATED but other than that not bad. As for the movies I'M SICK OF FRICKEN LIVE ACTION SACK-A-CRAP it just ruins anime series... except deathnote episode 20+ ruined that ... or somewhere around that. The LA version of that didn't look bad but I didn't watch them. I'll say this much. The Atlas Shrugged movie comes out 2011 apparently and if they ruin it (as they will) I may have to go on a bombing run...

The new pokemons are more alien like.

I only had pokemon yellow, silver and fire red...

What animes do you people here like?

Cowboy Bebop mostly. I really hate subtitles instead of dubbimg though. You wouldn't watch Dogtanian in French would you?
