da's a very good question.I really admired the thought of urs.See if appearance is not of a concern, humans will not have a development in the dressing sense and cleaning habits. I guess it all started right from the era of kings,rajas or emperors, where we find the entire public would be working for the dynasty's appearance as that being the show model of their representation and value, which later changed to a situation where, every one in the world want to be a king or ruler, so the real definiton of king or queen got diluted, as everybody in this world presents themselves as a king or a queen,so comes the competition in presentation, who looks reallly like the highness(though they may not be). Even today there are real heroes or rulers who do not care about the so called appearance, who are still recognised and respected as true rulers and kings, as the so called society do not forget the real meaning.
And appearance became so important in the society as each and every one expects the others around to look at them and feel wow(though they may not comment) but you got the compliment even withoput the words.This urge or wantness for people around to think who you are makes one present themselves as pleasing(though no one around care for the same:-)).This is like decorating ur food with some leaves though many may not eat it, but still, it makes them mentally satisfied.
Society is not any external object.
It is we who the society is .
We too like something pleasing and good to see rather something terrific, though it may be better in nature.
It all is built with the human nature of evolution.
We may be get convinced on the appearance with supporting points, but the whole society cant be expected to be the same way.
