he's actually an evil alien sent to slay us all but then lost his memory but had incredible fighting abilities and pursued a quest for the magic ASDF spheres that will grant a wish to the person who collects all four?

I'm having a guess here...

Dragonballs is plurial,
so there is not one that is allmighty...
Dragonballs give you power/might of some sort...
Long ago, they were perfectly in balance or together and everyone was happy...
Something happened and now they are scattered all over the planet/universe...
The villians ofcourse want them for their own,
but our hero will obviously prevent them to do so...

Hmmm... Maybe the hero has a girl (and maybe children),
which can be held hostage... But that's just a wild guess...

So how right am I?!...

Hmm.. Well, they grant you wishes, not powers, and they were never in balance, they get automatically scattered through the world when someone gets the 7 of them together and ake 1/3 wishes depending on the planet you're on currently...
