What's the Univeral Life Church about

It was founded in the 1960's as a humanist-spiritualist organization that primarily served as a way for people to marry interracial couples, as most states at the time required a minister/church-person to conduct the ceremony for it to be legally binding, and because it was the US in the 1960's, finding a church that would do the ceremony was nearly impossible. Several lawsuits including one in Colorado(?) resulted in it being upheld (except in one state) because they can't say a group isn't a legitimate religion because first-amendment blah blah state-can't-define-church-stuff.

I don't know if there was something specific like that, but I do know that homosexual marriage is functionally legal country-wide now.
