Also, we have other ways of shortening it down:
A bear = Een beer
A small bear = Een beertje
A girlfriend = Een vriendin
A cute girlfriend = Een vriendinnetje
Like that...

It's not only tje, but also etje, sje, ... Depending on the word...
It's to make a word smaller, cute, imposing, ...

i believe it's called agglutinative language or something like that. Hungarian works like that too, only we can't make ridiculously long words. It's still quite different.
