It was last year, but sadly, yes, it happened.

Speaking of odd holidays:
Today is text messaging's 20th birthday.

That's right: If you are 19 or younger, you have never lived in a world without text messaging.

Or what's more likely, in a world where text messaging referred to something very different.

The Wikipedia article has the history dating back to 1920, actually. It was a kind of rudimentary email using networked typewriter-like devices... Then "1337"-like numerical "text" were sent via pagers in the 1980s.

But the first SMS text message was sent from a computer to a phone on December 3, 1992. It was sent to someone who was at a Christmas party. The text: "Merry Christmas"

What I meant is that text messaging is a phrase that is made from two words that are both used in the meaning they already had, way before we started feeding punch cards into giant metal wardrobes pushing electrons around odd ways amidst heaps of wires and glass tubes and all kinds of weird shit like that.

I saw a news article the other day that used the word "phablet" - apparently a phablet is a device that is a combination phone and tablet. Phablet.

I think the word "phablet" sounds more like an insult or a racist slur. "Screw you, you stupid phablet!"

It could (and probably is, somewhere) be shortened to "phab".

I guess you're right, atom. Text messages have been around ever since text. Picture messages have probably existed for far longer.

I feel like that's an oxymoron.

Happy Opalia! Opalia was an ancient Roman festival held on August 25 and December 19 to celebrate the end of harvest and the storage of grains, respectively.

Food-related harvests are pretty common. After all, the first Thanksgiving was all about having survived the winter and having a good harvest.

Well, I just mentioned Thanksgiving. Then there's that ancient Roman holiday, Opalia...
