We can never know, due to the fact that we do not know if it is even possible for nothing to exist, due to the fact that "there is nothing" is a contradictory statement.

We mostly use it in the sense that there are no things. And by that we usually mean only a subset of all possible things.
So we imagine an arbitrary subset of reality that we can sort of grasp, and say that no element of that subset is present within the bounds of our arbitrary definition of "there".

But there is always something, including reality, which is a thing, so nothing can never exist in reality.

You're never doing nothing, either, because you're at least existing.
