In Portuguese we have ´,~,^ and ` but the latter is only used on "a". Also we had ¨ but it was recently banned. Now words are confusing as to the pronounce, although there were very few words that used it.

My guess is that it's so you can guess the pronunciation the first time you read it. Theare are different ways of interpreting the sound, and those help clear it up.

And à is just used as a kind of preposition/w/e... It's used to shorten the use of two a's, since it can be used as different things (preposition/thingy I don't know in English/another thingy I don't know in English, etc)
