We don't claim to have invented them, we just know that without the improvements that we made to them, they wouldn't be as useful.

What use is an invention anyways if you don't know how to use it? or more importantly, how to sell it.

Now that you mention it... that guy is from the U.S. and according to wikipedia he invented the telephone something like 4 years after he moved to Canada... So I think it's technically an American invention since he was an American citizen.
