Well, on my banner I used nothing but 2 images

Well I took a steel texture, used the pen tool to cut the shape, duplicated it and mirrored it so it'd be symmetrical, merged the duplicated layers, duplicated the merged layer, lowered the brightness level for the shadow, erased most of it but the edges on the left to give it a shadow look, took a sword picture, cut it out, duplicated it, mirrored it, wrote the text, blending options > external glow and done

Well when you put it that way, it sounds easy. What program did you use?

Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Should I get that before I go to my class?

Probably, it's good to practice some first, and get to know the tools.

Does PS cost anything?

Yes, but not if borrow it from a friend.

Why the italics?

Because I wouldn't want you to do it illegally.

I don't see how breaking the law is bad.

Then just look for a cracked version.
