There are a lot better ways to "protect me from the evils of the internet" than shutting the whole thing down...

Meh. It's natural to kill things, that's the way of life. Everything kils something else, it's necessary to survive. It becomes inhumane when they go and slaughter needlessly, for money, especially something on the verge of extinction.
